MEDIA RELEASE: TORONTO, ON April 22, 2026 — Sankofa Square is stepping into its #HotSquareSummer era. Today, the Square unveils its 2026 summer season, marking the first time the Square’s team has curated a full season of five different series, creating a steady stream of free weekly events, running from June through the end of August.

Framed under #HotSquareSummer, this season is designed to create a high-energy destination featuring breakout talent and beloved homegrown icons. As a central gathering point for the city, Sankofa Square remains committed to providing high-quality, barrier-free cultural experiences. Supported by free Wi-Fi, accessible amenities, and ample open seating, it is a space where every Torontonian and visitor, regardless of their background or budget, is invited to participate in the city’s vibrant social fabric, staying and connecting from the first morning coffee until the surrounding city lights take over after the sun sets.

“This summer, in addition to hosting festivals and events people know and love, we are curating a season that reflects the unapologetic energy of Toronto,” said Marnie Grona, Interim General Manager, Sankofa Square. “This marks a new chapter for the Square, and #HotSquareSummer is about establishing a new tempo for the Square and its place in the downtown core. Curated and programmed for its second year by D.PE Agency, the weekend will feature performances, ceremonies, art installations, film, and community-led activations, bringing together a wide range of voices and experiences across the Square.

AN URBAN FESTIVAL HUB: THE WORLD IN A CITY

Beyond its curated weekly series, Sankofa Square remains the city’s premier urban festival hub, standing as a vivid reflection of Toronto’s identity as the "world in a city." This season, the Square continues its tradition of hosting large-scale cultural festivals and events that bring global communities together, including returning and new favourites such as Luminato, Desifest, Thai Festival Toronto, the Indonesian Food Festival, Anatolia Festival, and World Fest. Alongside city-wide celebrations of international soccer in June and July, these festivals transform the Square into a global stage where all of Toronto can see itself reflected. Supported by free Wi-Fi, accessible amenities, and ample open seating, the Square is designed to be a seamless, high-energy environment for both major cultural milestones and everyday community connection.

Together, these festivals and weekly events keep the Square active and open to the city all summer long.
