Media Release: Sankofa Day at Sankofa Square Unveils Full Lineup and Schedule Ahead of August 23rd Celebration
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – TORONTO, ON – August 19, 2025 – With just days to go, organizers of Sankofa Day at Sankofa Square have released the full schedule and lineup for the inaugural event, inviting all of Toronto to a free celebration of culture and community on Saturday, August 23rd. The day is a dynamic blend of music, art, sports, culture, and powerful storytelling, designed to be a celebration that welcomes everyone.
The free, all-day event at Sankofa Square (formerly Yonge-Dundas Square) is hosted by Flow 98.7 FM's Alicia “ACE” West and kicks off with powerful Indigenous and African ancestral ceremonies. The day features a vibrant cultural showcase that includes a celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture with JERK X JOLLOF, an Afrodiasporic DJ set to groove to by Afrique Like Me, and a live performance by Indigenous artist Natasha Fisher. The stage will also feature a special free DJ set by the legendary Kardinal Offishall, presented as part of the iDREAM Awards. Attendees can also grab commemorative giveaways, explore art installations by Nicole Nomsa Moyo, watch the Everyone vs. Racism Graffiti Project come to life, and enjoy a Caribbean Film Festival screening.
For those who love to stay active, there will be a pre-event community run with Hill Run Club, Ultra Black, and Unchained Athletics, as well as sports activations with the Toronto Raptors, HOOPQUEENS, and Toronto Tempo, sponsored by Canada Basketball.
The day culminates with a free closing party featuring the globally-renowned collective, MOONSHINE. With an artisan and food vendor market, this inclusive day celebrates Toronto’s rich history and cultural diversity!
“Sankofa Day comes after our 2024 public research and community consultations, during which Toronto was invited to 'Embrace the Possibilities.' As we work to bring the community’s vision for the Square to life, this marks a meaningful moment for the city—celebrating the power of collective ideas and demonstrating opportunities and programming that revitalize the space,” said program curator Ashley McKenzie Barnes, creative director and founder of D.PE Agency (pronounced “dope”). “I am incredibly proud to have partnered with the Sankofa Square team and the broader community to bring this diverse lineup of artists, performers, athletes, and changemakers together for this monumental celebration. We invite everyone to join us for a historical day of connection, culture, and absolute joy.”
“This inaugural Sankofa Day at Sankofa Square marks a pivotal moment in our journey, one that began with the official renaming of the Square. It is our hope this day will grow into a larger annual festival,” said Julian Sleath, General Manager, Sankofa Square. “As we celebrate Sankofa Day, we are reminded that the word 'Sankofa' calls on all of us to 'go back and get it'—to learn from the past to build a better future. It’s a principle that is echoed in many societies under many names, and it's a sentiment all Torontonians can embrace. As we build forward, we do so in partnership with the City of Toronto, the business community, and our many incredible community partners, to ensure the Square remains a major destination for visitors and a welcoming space for all to gather and celebrate.”

The Sankofa Principle
Sankofa (SAHN-koh-fah) is a Twi word from the Akan Tribe of Ghana that loosely translates to, “go back and get it.” Its literal translation comes from the Akan proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenkyiri,” meaning, “It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot (or left behind).” Sankofa is a phrase that encourages learning from the past to inform the future. While Sankofa originates from the Ghanaian Akan language, it broadly resonates across African and Black communities globally as an expression of cultural and political affirmation. Sankofa is a timeless concept that transcends borders, cultures, and generations, and the sentiment it expresses—to learn from the past to build a better future—is echoed in many societies and under many names.
What is Sankofa Day?
Sankofa Day globally refers to the UNESCO International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, observed annually on August 23rd. Rooted in the Sankofa principle of learning from the past to build a stronger future, this day is recognized globally in countries like Haiti, Senegal, France, and the United Kingdom. It is a global moment for reflection, healing, and a collective call to action for justice and creative expression for the African Diaspora and all humanity.
