“Disappearing Acts” is a video and dance party honouring gay and lesbian bars that were once the heart and soul of Toronto’s queer community. They were more than nightlife spots: they were vital sanctuaries of connection, resilience, and joy and played a pivotal role in shaping queer identity, health and culture in the city.

The devastating loss of lives during the AIDS crisis, urban gentrification, and social media have all contributed to their disappearance.

It’s a tribute—and a reminder—of where and why we gathered and how these lost places helped shape our communities.
